IEEE 754

  • IEEE 754 is the most widely adopted floating-point arithmetic standard. It is worth noting that it is not THE standard for floating-point arithmetic. There are less commonly used floating-point standard in the world.
  • The first version, IEEE 754-1985, was published in 1985 and covered only floating-point arithmetic.
  • Later in 2008, a new version IEEE 754-2008 was published with important additions including fused multiply-add (FMA) operation.
  • The most recent version is IEEE 754-2019 (as of 2023). The revision of the floating point standard is an on-going process.
